How To Add Muriatic Acid In Water?

Feb 28, 2022 | Blog

A skillfully designed and commercially built aquatic facility is a good investment. The commercial pool should appeal to all ages of the community. Through and through, cleaning and maintenance of the pool will ensure user safety during the swimming season. One of the measures taken is the addition of muriatic acid in the pool for balancing the water pH. This blog has detailed information about what muriatic acid is, the need of using it, and the method of application. But why is pH maintenance essential? Let’s find out.

Is pH Level Maintenance of Pool Water Important?

pH is basically the chemical balance or acidity level of any liquid, and in this case – water. Maintaining appropriate acidic levels is essential to ensure that everyone makes the most use of it during the season. If the overall pH is too high, it results in skin irritation and also corrodes metallic parts of the pool. On the other hand, low levels are not beneficial either; they will render the chlorine application void.

What Is Muriatic Acid?

It is a special kind of acid which is a less pure version or a diluted form of hydrochloric acid – HCL. Muriatic acid has gained popularity because of its high corrosive nature and pH-reducing quality of water. It also kills molds, gets rid of rust stains, and removes calcium deposits.

Why To Add Muriatic Acid?

Adding muriatic acid is useful when the pH of the pool level goes too high than normal. The optimal range is 7.2 to 7.8; if the reading drops below 7.2, the water falls under acidic category. Moreover, if the pH is greater than 7.8, then it’s alkaline. Having highly acidic water is more dangerous than alkaline; however, both situations should be handled with care.

Adding Muriatic Acid To Your Pool Water

Right chemistry and a balanced pool are achieved easily via adding this component in the following way:

Step 1 – Testing Pool Levels
Whenever you start maintenance of the pool, either commercial or not, the starting point is always pool assessment. Test the chemical levels, and for that, strips are available. However, sometimes a strip test may show false results; therefore, getting a sensory test is important.

Step 2 – Protective Gear
Donning protective gear is very important while adding muriatic acid to your pool water. It is highly corrosive in nature, and even the slightest exposure will cause harm. The worker should get a pair of goggles, good grade gloves, and a covering that envelops the entire body.

Step 3 – Acid Dilution
This is a critical step of the entire process. Dilution before introducing the liquid inside the pool is mandatory and diluting it ensures safe, balanced levels as the end result. Remember not to add water to acid but instead slowly mix acid in a large, more like 4 or 5-gallon bucket of water. Use clean water and keep the ratio of 1:10 acid to water.

Step 4 – Start Your Pool
Do not forget to turn your pool on before adding the diluted acid; this ensures proper circulation.

Step 5 – Slowly Add Muriatic Acid To Pool Water
It is time to add diluted muriatic acid to your pool water finally. Take it to the place which will ensure thorough dispersion and start pouring it.

Step 6 – Check The pH Again
Do not enter the pool for the next 30 minutes. After the time passes, test water chemistry again and enter after the reading turns out between 7.2-7.8
